Leo R. Townsend, born on July 17, 1933, in Sherman County, Kansas, passed away on January 22, 2026, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

Leo was a dedicated member of his community and a respected figure in the construction industry, having spent many years owning Townsend Construction. Leo had a longstanding career that significantly impacted the agricultural community, where his expertise in construction was vital in building numerous bins and buildings for local farmers. Additionally, Leo was a proud fourth-generation landowner of Townsend Farms, a testament to his deep-rooted connection to the land and the community. His contributions have left a lasting mark on the region, and he will be remembered for his dedication and hard work.

Leo was an alumnus of Sherman County High School, graduating in 1951, he furthered his education and played baseball at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado graduating in 1956.

His commitment to service was evident during his time in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Specialist Third Class.

An active member of the community, Leo was associated with the Goodland Elks and was a familiar face at the Sugar Hills Country Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow golf enthusiasts. In addition to golf, Leo had a passion for travel and cherished moments spent with his grandchildren, relishing every opportunity to create lasting memories with family.

Leo is survived by his wife, Eunice, and their three children: Curt (Jeannie) Peter of Melbourne, FL, Darol (Carrie) Peter of Goodland, KS, and Corinne (Thomas) de Herrera of Denver, CO. He took great pride in his family, which also includes six grandchildren: Nathan (Pamela) Peter, Lindsey (Scott) Schuetz, Nic (Jena) de Herrera, Luc (Abby) de Herrera, Evan (Kaitlyn) Peter, and Witton Peter, as well as five great-grandchildren, Devin, Peyton, Camdyn Peter, and Sam and Sadie Lakins.

He is preceded in death by his parents Glen and Ole (Kenny) Townsend and siblings, Ray Townsend, Phyllis Maupin, Janice Bunker and Kenneth Townsend.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Bateman Funeral Home, located at 211 E 11th St, Goodland, KS 67735. A memorial service will be held the following day, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:30 AM, also at Bateman Funeral Home. Leo R. Townsend's remarkable life was characterized by dedication to family, commitment to his community, and a passion for every moment spent with those he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
