Virgil "Allen" Scott

Virgil Allen Scott, 93, of Sharon Springs, Kansas, passed away at the Wallace County Community Care Center on January 27, 2021. Allen was born on March 30, 1927 to Roland and Erma (Walters) Scott on the family farm 6 miles south of Wallace in Wallace County, Kansas. He was the youngest of 3 sons, following brothers Roland Jr. and Roy. Allen attended grade school at Prairie View, a one room country school, high school at Wallace High School until it closed in 1943, then graduated from the Wallace County Community High School in Sharon Springs in 1945. In March of 1945 he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. Allen returned to Wallace County and the farm following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946. In the early 1950s he attained his private pilot license.

On January 2, 1953, Allen married Berna (Cox) Scott at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church. They took over the family farm in Wallace County where they raised their loving family. Allen and Berna were blessed with three children; Paula, Virgil Jr. and Lisa. Faith, family and the community were important to Allen. He was a member of the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church and was active in Dover Grange, Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. Allen and Berna loved to travel together and they saw much of the country during their 68 years of marriage. A few favorite trips were attending the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Speedway and visiting Chicago to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, his daughter Lisa Scott, daughter-in-law Trish Davies and son-in-law Joe Korbe. Allen is survived by his wife, Berna, Sharon Springs, daughter, Paula Korbe, Garden City; son Virgil and wife Diane, Broomfield, CO; six grandchildren, Stephanie Stroud, her husband Brad, Lenexa, KS; Travis Korbe, Wallace, KS; Christopher Korbe, his wife Sarah, Spearville, KS; Andrew Korbe, his wife Hailey, Garden City, KS; Caiti Korbe, Garden City, KS; Nicole Scott, Broomfield, CO; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be contributed to Fort Hays State University Foundation and designated to the Allen and Berna (Cox) Scott Family Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for Wallace County students; or the Wallace County Foundation, designated to the Allen and Berna Scott Endowment.
