Marilyn Wenger Obituary

God saw the road was getting rough, the hills too hard to climb.  He gently closed her loving eyes and whispered, “Peace is thine.”

Marilyn Abercrombie Wenger passed away in Ft. Collins, CO on May 12, 2018 at the age of 94.   She was born in Goodland, KS and spent most of her youth in Sherman County.  She married Virgil Wenger from Oberlin, KS in 1946 following his service in WWII. The couple had two daughters. The family lived in McCook, NE and later in Goodland, Meade and Garden City, KS. Virgil passed away in 1978 and Marilyn returned to Goodland until moving to Loveland, CO in her later years.

Marilyn was an outgoing, generous and energetic person.  She loved being around people, whether   community activities or visiting with friends over coffee. She was a fulltime homemaker until the early 1960s when the Wenger’s purchased a hardware store in Meade, KS (Wenger Hardware,) which they operated until moving to Garden City, KS in the early 1970s. Marilyn worked at the Girl Scouts office in Garden City. After retiring, she volunteered at the Carnegie Arts Center and the High Plains Museum in Goodland. Marilyn and Virgil were active members of the Methodist Church wherever they lived.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband Virgil, parents Oliver and Lettie Abercrombie (Taylor,) brother William (Bill), sister Olive Taylor Duell, and a great-grandson, Carter Smith.

She is survived by her daughters Vicki Anderson (Ted) and Marcia Kittel (Richard,) grandchildren Kent  (Jennie,) Mark (Pamela,) and Bret (Kelly) Anderson, Emily Bogle Smith (Chris,) Scott Bogle (Amber,) Anna Kittel Merek (Patrick,) Leslie Kittel, Jessie Kittel (Jennifer) and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Oberlin United Methodist Church from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to enjoy Marilyn's favorite pass time, visiting  over coffee and cookies.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2 p.m. CT at the Oberlin Cemetery in Oberlin, KS.  Marilyn’s ashes will be buried beside her beloved Virgil. Rest in peace, our dear mother.  Online condolences may be left at www.batemanfuneral.com
